Preventing Head Injuries: Guidelines for Safety

W
Written by Dr. Wakkman Consultant Neurosurgeon

As neurosurgeons, we see the severe impact of head trauma daily. While we are prepared to perform emergency interventions, prevention remains the most effective tool to protect brain health.

Helmets and Road Safety

Vehicular accidents and motorcycle falls are primary causes of head injuries in Kabul. Always wear a certified helmet when riding motorcycles or bicycles. Ensure seatbelts are fastened at all times inside motor vehicles.

Fall Prevention at Home

Falls are particularly dangerous for elderly family members and infants. Prevent slips by:

  • Installing solid handrails on stairs.
  • Ensuring adequate lighting in hallways and bathrooms.
  • Removing loose rugs or slippery floor coverings.

Sports Safety

Children and athletes should wear appropriate protective headgear during contact sports. If a concussion is suspected, the athlete must be removed from play immediately and undergo medical evaluation before returning.
